How CARFAX Reporting Can Help Protect Your Ceramic Coating Investment

Proper Preperation... Proper Doumentation

When you invest in a professional ceramic coating, proper documentation matters. If part of your vehicle is later damaged and repainted, proof of the existing coating may help you recover the cost of recoating that repaired area through an insurance claim.

A Mazda CX-5 that recently returned to our Plum shop is a great real-world example.

A Ceramic-Coated Mazda Needed Body Repairs

We originally ceramic coated this Mazda CX-5 earlier in the year. As part of our ceramic coating service, the installation was reported to CARFAX and added to the vehicle’s service history.

The roof later needed to be repainted. Because paint and body repairs remove the coating from the affected panels, the freshly painted roof needed to be ceramic coated again to restore its protection.

The owner had documentation showing that the Mazda was professionally ceramic coated before the repair. In this case, the insurance company covered the cost of having the roof recoated.

Once the new paint was ready, the CX-5 returned to Lightning Detail so we could restore the ceramic protection. We also completed an interior detail while it was at the shop, giving the owner a freshly protected roof and a clean, refreshed interior.

Why Ceramic Coatings Must Be Reapplied After Paintwork

A ceramic coating bonds to the vehicle’s painted surface. When a body shop sands, repairs, or repaints a panel, the original coating on that area is removed along with the affected paint or clear coat.

The replacement paint does not automatically include a new ceramic coating. That is a separate service that must be completed after the repaired paint has cured according to the body shop’s recommendations.

Depending on the damage, recoating may also require preparation beyond simply applying more product. We evaluate the repaired area, confirm that it is ready for coating, prepare the surface, and apply the appropriate coating to restore protection.

How CARFAX Reporting May Help With an Insurance Claim

Insurance companies generally need documentation when considering reimbursement for an existing aftermarket product or service. A ceramic coating may be difficult to verify visually, especially after a damaged panel has already been repaired.

A CARFAX service record helps establish that a professional ceramic coating was installed before the loss occurred. Along with the original invoice and coating information, this can give the vehicle owner clearer documentation to provide to the insurance adjuster.

Insurance coverage varies by company, policy, and individual claim, so reimbursement cannot be guaranteed. Vehicle owners should inform the insurance company about the coating during the claim process and ask whether recoating the repaired panels can be included in the estimate.

Whenever possible, do this before repairs are finalized. It is much easier to address the coating while the claim is still open than to request additional reimbursement afterward.

More Than a Line on a Vehicle History Report

CARFAX reporting gives your professional detailing services a place in the vehicle’s documented service history. This can provide several benefits:

  • It creates a record of when the ceramic coating was installed.
  • It helps support future insurance documentation.
  • It gives future buyers a clearer picture of how the vehicle was maintained.
  • It keeps professional services associated with the vehicle’s VIN.
  • It complements your invoice, warranty information, and maintenance records.

Documentation does not replace your original invoice or guarantee insurance coverage, but it provides another useful record of the service.

What to Do if Your Coated Vehicle Is Damaged

If a ceramic-coated vehicle needs body or paint repairs, take a few simple steps:

  1. Tell the body shop and insurance adjuster that the vehicle has a professional ceramic coating.
  2. Locate your original invoice and coating documentation.
  3. Check the vehicle’s CARFAX service history for the reported installation.
  4. Ask the insurance company to include recoating the affected panels in the repair estimate.
  5. Contact the original coating installer before the claim is closed.
  6. Confirm the recommended curing period for the new paint before scheduling the coating.

The coating installer may also be able to provide an estimate or supporting documentation for the adjuster.

Ceramic Coating With Service After the Installation

A professional ceramic coating is more than the product applied to the paint. The quality of the preparation, proper installation, accurate records, maintenance guidance, and support after an unexpected repair all contribute to the value of the service.

At Lightning Detail, our ceramic coating packages include CARFAX reporting so the service becomes part of the vehicle’s documented history. If an accident or repair affects the coating later, we can evaluate the repaired panels, provide recoating information, and help you restore the protection.

This Mazda CX-5 shows why those details matter. The owner had documentation of the original coating, the insurance company covered recoating the repaired roof, and the vehicle left our shop protected and refreshed once again.
